Trevelyan, George (1795 -1871)

This stamp is found on books still at Nettlecombe Court, and Clements states that it is that of the Reverend George Trevelyan, eldest son of the Venerable George Trevelyan, third son of Sir John Trevelyan, 4th Baronet of Nettlecombe, and Harriet, daughter of Sir Richard Neave 1st Baronet. He was educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford, where he matriculated 5 June 1813, age seventeen. He took his B.A. in 1818, and his M.A. in 1820. He became Vicar of Milverton Prima with the chapelry of Langford Budville 1823 1825; Rector of Treborough in Somerset 1828; and Vicar of Stogumber in Somerset from 1821 to 1871, He married, Frances Anne, only daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Lumsden. He died sine prole in 1871. Clements must have had some reason for assigning the stamp specifically to the Reverend George Trevelyan. The stamp appears to be of the seventeenth century, and has only been seen on seventeenth century books. If Clements were mistaken, it would seem to be the stamp of John Trevelyan (d. 1623) High Sheriff of Somerset 16 James I, who rebuilt the mansion house of Nettlecombe. He was the son of John Trevelyan of Trevelyan (d. 1577) and Wilmot, daughter of John Harris of Havne, Serjeant at Law. He married Urith, daughter of Sir John Chichester of Ralegh.
