Tenison, Thomas, Archbishop of Canterbury (1636 -1715)

Thomas Tenison was born 29 September 1636, the son of John Tenison, Rector of Mundesley in Norfolk, and Mercy, eldest daughter of Thomas Dowsing of Cottenham. He was educated at Norwich Free School and Corpus Christi College Cambridge, where he was admitted scholar 22 April 1653, took his B.A. in Lent 1657, and studied physic. He was ordained privately about 1659, took his M.A. in 1660; was admitted a Fellow of Corpus 24 March 1662, became a Tutor and a University reader in 1665; and Vicar of St Andrew the Great, Cambridge the same year. From 1680 to 1691 he was Rector of St Martin in the Fields in London and was appointed Archdeacon of London 26 October 1689, Bishop of Lincoln 1691 and Archbishop of Canterbury 1695. He married Anne daughter of Richard Love Master of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge and Dean of Ely. He died 14 December 1715.
