Sykes, Mark Masterman, Sir, 3rd Baronet, of Sledmere (1771 -1823)

Sir Mark Masterman Sykes was the eldest son of Sir Christopher Sykes, 2nd Baronet of Sledmere, Yorkshire, and Elizabeth, daughter of William Tatton, of Wythenshaw in Cheshire, and succeeded him in 1801. Educated at Brasenose College, Oxford, where he matriculated 10 May 1788. He represented York in Parliament 1807 20, retiring because of ill health. In 1795 he assumed the additional name of Masterman on his marriage, 11 November 1795, to Henrietta daughter and heir of Henry Masterman of Settrington Hall in Yorkshire. She died in July 1813, and on 2 August 1814, he married his first cousin Mary Elizabeth Egerton, only daughter of William Egerton, formerly Tatton, of Tatton Park and Wythenshaw. He had no children by either wife, and his brother succeeded to the title and the estate. A famous bibliophile, his library, rich in incunables, early editions of the classics, and the Elizabethan drama, was sold by auction by R.H. Evans in three parts on 11 and 28 May and 21 June 1824. A member of the Roxburghe Club, a catalogue of his library was prepared by Henry John Todd.
