Smythe, Thomas, 1st Viscount Strangford (1599 -1635)
Thomas Smythe was the son of Sir John Smythe of Ostenhanger and Ashford in Kent, High Sheriff of Kent, and Elizabeth, daughter and heiress of John Fineux of Hawe in Herne, Kent. He inherited a considerable fortune from his father who was the son of Thomas Smythe, farmer of the customs to Queen Elizabeth I. Thomas married in or before 1621, Barbara daughter of Robert Sydney, Earl of Leicester by his first wife Barbara, daughter and heir of John Gamage of Coity in Glamorganshire. He was made a Knight of the Bath at the coronation of Charles I in 1625, and was created Viscount Strangford in the peerage of Ireland 17 July 1628. He died 30 June 1635 aged 36.
