Rivers, John, Sir, 1st Baronet (1579 -1651)

Sir John Rivers, of Chafford in Kent, was the son and heir of Sir George Rivers of Chafford, and Frances, daughter and coheir of William Bowyer. His grandfather was Sir John Rivers, Lord Mayor of London in 1573-1574. He was educated at St Mary Hall, Oxford, where he matriculated 14 October 1596, age seventeen. He was admitted Student at the Inner Temple in 1600. He was created a Baronet in his father's lifetime, 19 July 1621. He married in or before 1602, Dorothy, daughter and coheir of Thomas Potter of Well Street in Westerham, Kent. She died 1627, and he married secondly Dulcibella, daughter of Barnabus Colnett of Combley in the Isle of Wight, widow of Nicholas Love, Warden of Winchester. He supported Parliament during the Civil War. He died about 1651, and administration of his will was granted 2 October of that year. The baronetcy continued but became extinct on the death of eleventh baronet, Sir Henry Chandos Rivers 31 October 1870.
