Prest, William (1744 -1818)
William Prest was baptized 8 April 1744 at Bedale in North Yorkshire, the son of William Prest and May Anne Elliott. In 1791 he is listed as a maltster and currier in Bedale. On 24 May 1769 he married Elizabeth Robson, at Hornby, near York. He died in 1818, his will being proven on 24 April 1818.
His books were sold at two auctions: the first, A catalogue of the very splendid library of William Prest … was sold by Sotheby, 1 June & 5 following days, London, 1819. The second was Catalogue of the splendid and valuable library of an eminent collector [i.e. W. Prest] ... : which will be sold by Mr. Evans ... on ... May 14, and two following days. London, 1827.
According to Clements the library of William Prest “of Lewisham and St James's Place, London” was sold in London by Sotheby’s 1-2 July 1819 (sic)
