Pitcairn, Robert (1793 -1855)

The crest and motto of the family of Pitcairn of Pitcairns House, Perthshire, possibly of John Pitcairn, for whom there is an entry in the edition of Fairbairn’s Crests published in the 1860s.
Another possibility is Sir James Pitcairn (1776-1859). Others include Pitcairns of Dreghorn Castle (two and a half miles S.W. of Edinburgh); Pitcairn of Pitcullo Castle, Fife; Perthshire Pitcairns.
John Pitcairn of Pitcairns had a grant of arms in 1808.

The most likely candidate, however, would seem to be Robert Pitcairn (1793-1855), the second son of Robert Pitcairn and Jean Kincaid. He was admitted as a Writer to the Signet on 21 November 1815.
In 1822 he published Collections relative to the funerals of Mary Queen of Scots. In 1828 the Bannatyne Club issued Chronicon centobii Sancte Crucis Edinburgensis, edited by Pitcairn. He also wrote a three-volume book on criminal trials before the High Court of Justice in Scotland that was of great help to Sir Walter Scott.
In 1839 he married Hester Hine Hunt, daughter of Henry Hunt, merchant of London, and had seven children.
