Neville, Thomas (1548 -1615)

Thomas Neville, Dean of Canterbury, was the son of Richard Neville of South Leverton in Nottinghamshire, and Anne, daughter of Sir Walter Mantell of Heyford in Northamptonshire. He was educated at Pembroke College, Cambridge, of which he became a Fellow in November 1570. In 1582 he was presented to the Mastership of Magdalene College by Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Suffolk, who was the grandson of the founder, Lord Audley. He was also a Chaplain to Queen Elizabeth, Vice Chancellor and D.D. 1588. He was appointed Dean of Peterborough in 1590. In February 1593 he was appointed Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, by the Queen. In 1597 he became Dean of Canterbury. A bachelor, he reconstructed the Great Court of Trinity, and built the Second Court at his own expence.
