Lindsay, Alexander Dunlop, 1st Baron Lindsay of Birker (1879 -1952)

Alexander Dunlop was born 14 May 1879, the eldest son of The Reverend Thomas M. Lindsay, and Anna Colquhoun-Stirling-Murray-Dunlop. He was educated at Glasgow Academy and Glasgow University, where he received an M.A. 1899, and at University College, Oxford, where he took his B.A. in 1902 and his M.A. in 1908. He was Fellow and Tutor in Philosophy at Balliol College 1906-1922. He married in 1907 Erica, daughter of F. Storr. During World War I he was a Major on the General List, being mentioned in dispatches and awarded the M.B.E. in 1918 and the C.B.E. in 1919. In 1922 he became Professor of Moral Philosophy at Glasgow University, but was elected Master of Balliol in 1924, an office he held until 1949, when he left Oxford to become Principal of the University College of North Staffordshire 1949-1952. He was an editor of Karl Marx’s Das Capital, and the author of The Nature of Religious Truth, The Essentials of Democracy, The Modern Democratic State among other books. He was created Baron Lindsay of Birker 13 November 1945. He died 18 March 1952, and was succeeded by his elder son.
