Juxon, William, Archbishop of Canterbury (1582 -1663)

William Juxon was the second son of Richard Juxon, Receiver General of the See of Chichester. He was educated at the Merchant Taylor's School in London, and went up to Oxford as a scholar of St John's, where he studied law, taking his B.C.L. in 1603. Ordained 20 January 1609, he was nominated by his college to the Vicarage of St Giles, Oxford, where he was much frequented for his edifying preaching. In 1615 he was presented to the Rectory of Somerton in Oxfordshire. He became President of St John's College, Oxford 1621 1633, D.C.L. 1621; Vice Chancellor of the University of Oxford 1621; Dean of Worcester 1627; Bishop of London in 1633; Lord High Treasurer 1636 1641; and Archbishop of Canterbury in 1660. As Bishop of London, he attended Charles I on the scaffold, and spent the interregnum on his estate of Compton Parva in Gloucestershire, where he spent much time hunting. He never married, and the residue of his goods passed to his nephew Sir William Juxon, by whom the Archbishop's library was given to St John's College, Oxford in 1664.
