Jocelyn, Robert, 1st Viscount Jocelyn (1688 -1756)

Robert Jocelyn was the only son of Thomas Jocelyn, of Sawbridgeworth in Hertfordshire, and Anne, daughter of Thomas Bray, of Westminster. He was admitted to Gray's Inn 28 November 1709. He married as his first wife, licence dated 24 July 1720, Charlotte, daughter and coheir of Charles Anderson, of Worcester. He was a Member of the Irish Parliament for Granard from 1725 1727 and for Newtownwards in County Down 1727 1739, and became successively Solicitor General 1727 1730, Attorney General 1730 1739, and Lord High Chancellor of Ireland 1739 1756. He was created Baron Newport 29 November 1743 and Viscount Jocelyn 6 December 1755. His first wife died 23 February 1747 and he married secondly, 15 November 1754, Frances, daughter of Thomas Claxton, of Dublin, and widow of Richard Parsons, 1st Earl of Ross. Robert, his only son by his first wife, was created Earl of Roden 1 December 1771, and inherited through his wife the library of James Hamilton, Earl of Clanbrassil. The Roden library, or part of it, was sold anonymously at Sotheby's in 1911.
