Gurney, Hudson (1775 -1864)

Hudson Gurney, of Keswick in Norfolk, was the eldest son of Richard Gurney, of Keswick, and Agatha, daughter and heir of David Barclay, of Youngsbury in Hertfordshire. He was Quaker, and a partner in Gurney's Bank, and Barclay and Perkins Brewery. He married, 27 September 1809, Margaret, daughter of Robert Barclay, of Urie in Kincardineshire. He was Member of Parliament for Shaftesbury 1812, and for Newtown, Isle of Wight 1816 1832. He was also an antiquary and a writer of verse, a Fellow of the Royal Society, of the Royal Astronomical Society and the Linnean Society, a Deputy Lieutenant and Justice of the Peace for Norfolk, High Sheriff of Norfolk in 1835, and a Freeman of the City of Norwich 21 September 1806. He traced his descent from Hugh Gourney, a companion of William the Conqueror whose descendants were Barons and bore the arms Paly of six or and azure. He died without issue, and was succeeded in his estate by his kinsman John Henry Gurney.
