Grenville, William Wyndham, Baron (1759 -1834)

William Wyndham Grenville was the fourth, but third surviving, son of the Honourable George Grenville, and Elizabeth, daughter of Sir William Wyndham, Baronet. Educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford, where he matriculated 14 December 1776, he won the Chancellor's prize for Latin verse 1779, and obtained his B.A. in 1780. He became a Student of Lincoln's Inn 6 April 1780, but was not called to the bar. Returned to Parliament at a by-election for Buckingham in February 1782, he was Chief Secretary to his brother, George Nugent Temple, Earl Temple, who was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, the same year, and Paymaster General in 1783. He was returned for Buckinghamshire in April 1784, was elected Speaker of the House of Commons 5 January to 5 June 1789, became Home Secretary in the same year, and was created Baron Grenville 25 November 1790. He was Foreign Secretary 1791 1801, Prime Minister 1806 1807, and Chancellor of Oxford University 1809 1834. He married, 18 July 1792, Anne Pitt, only daughter of Thomas 1st Baron Camelford. These stamps were cut for the Chancellor's Prize books of Oxford University.
