Gordon, Adam, 8th Viscount Kenmure (1792 -1847)
Adam Gordon was the second, but eldest surviving, son of Adam Gordon, an officer in the army and afterwards Collector of Customs at Portpatrick (d. 1806) and his first wife, Harriet, daughter of Daniel Davies, and sister of Deborah Davies, Robert Burns's “lovely Davies”. He was a midshipman on the Ajax, and was present at the actions against the French off Finesterre in 1805 and at Trafalgar, and displayed great gallantry on the American lakes during the war with the United States in 1813. He succeeded his uncle as Viscount Kenmure, 21 September 1840, lived for a time in the Isle of Man, and married Mary Anne, eldest daughter of James Wildey, 2 November 1843. He died at Kenmure Castle without issue 1 September 1847 when the title became extinct.
