Fitzmaurice, Henry Petty, 3rd Marquess of Lansdowne (1780 -1863)

Henry Petty Fitzmaurice was the elder son of William, 1st Marquess of Lansdowne, and his second wife Louisa Fitzpatrick, daughter of John, 2nd Earl of Upper Ossory. He was educated at Westminster School, Edinburgh University and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was admitted as a nobleman 26 October 1798, matriculated the same year, took his M.A. in 1801, and was made an Honorary LL.D. in 1811. He succeeded his half brother, John, as 3rd Marquess in 1809. He was Member of Parliament for Colne in Wiltshire 1802 1806, for Cambridge University 1806 1807 and for Camelford 1807 1809. He was served as Chancellor of the Exchequer 1806 1807, and Home Secretary August to December 1827. He held the post of Lord President of the Council 1830 1834, 1835 1841, and 1846 1852, and in the Cabinet without office 1852 1858. He was also Lord Rector of Glasgow University 1827 1831, an LL.D., a Fellow of the Royal Society and a Knight of the Garter in 1836. He married, 30 March 1808, Louisa Emma Fox Strangways, the fifth daughter of Henry Thomas, 2nd Earl of Ilchester.
