Fitzgibbon, Richard Hobart, 3rd Earl of Clare (1793 -1864)
Richard Hobart Fitzgibbon was the second son of John Fitzgibbon, 1st Earl of Clare, and Anne Whaley, eldest daughter of Richard Capel Whaley of Whaley Abbey, Co Wicklow. Colonel of the Limerick Militia and Member of Parliament for Limerick from 1818 to 1841, he succeeded his brother John as 3rd Earl in 1851. On the 11 July 1825 he married Diana, daughter of Charles Bridges Woodcock, of Brentford Butts in Middlesex. Their only son, John Charles Henry Fitzgibbon, Viscount Fitzgibbon, was an officer in the 8th Hussars, and was killed at the charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava. Part of the library was sold at Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge 16 April 1866, and a further portion 31 January 1881.
