Fairlie, John (1799 -1885)
John Fairlie was the second son of William Fairlie (1754 1825) of the family of Fairlie of Holms, and Margaret, daughter and coheir of John Ogilvy of Murtle. He married firstly Isabel Enderton by whom he had a son, Herbert James Fairlie; secondly Louisa Home Purves; and thirdly Mary Isaacson. There are two Scottish families of Fairlie. The arms in the stamp are those of Fairlie of Bruntsfield, probably a cadet of Fairlie of Braid, said to have its origin in a natural son of King Robert II. John Fairlie was a cadet of Fairlie of Holms, whose true arms are quite distinct, (Argent on a chevron between three water bougets sable three mullets argent, a bordure ermine). However the impalement for Enderton shows this stamp to have been his, as no member of the family of Fairlie of Bruntsfield married a wife of the Enderton family.
