Crowle, John Charles (1738 -1811)

John Charles Crowle [the two first names are sometimes reversed] was the only son of Richard Crowle and Elizabeth Pearman of Fryston Hall Yorkshire. He was educated at Westminster School, then at Trinity College Cambridge. He was returned as MP for Richmond in Yorkshire from 1769 until 1774. With his interest in Antiquarian matters, he became a member of The Society of Dilettanti from 1764, becoming its secretary 1774-1778. He bequeathed his extra-illustrated edition of Thomas Pennant's London to the British Museum. Other books extra-illustrated by J.C.Crowle were sold at Sotheby's, 11 July and 14 November 2002 from the possession of Brigadier C.E.Tyron-Wilson of Dalham Tower, Milnthorpe, Cumbria. There is a full-length portrait of Crowle by Pompeo Girolamo Batoni in the Louvre.
