Broun, Archibald (1816 -1893)

Archibald Broun of Johnstounburn in East Lothian, born 15 October 1816, was the second son of Andrew Broun of Johnstounburn, Post Captain in the Royal Navy, and Helen daughter of Thomas Campbell. His father died in 1818, and his elder brother in 1830 when he inherited the estate. After finishing at Edinburgh University, he was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1838. He published Reports of Cases before the High Court and Circuit Courts of Judiciary in Scotland 1842, 1843, 1844 and 1845, and was appointed Advocate Depute in 1852 and 1858, and Principal Clerk (First Division) of the Court of Session 1867-1886. He was also a Justice of the Peace, a Deputy Lieutenant of East Lothian, an officer in East LothianYeomanry Cavalry, a member of the Royal Company of Archers, and Her Majesty’s Bodyguard for Scotland. He married 18 March 1857, Marion Madeline, daughter of George Meikle, Surgeon in Madras. Their eldest son Frederick Stuart Meikle (b. 1864) succeeded to the estate on the death of Archibald Broun on 6 December 1893. The arms were granted to George Browne of Gorgie Milne [formerly Midlothian, now in Edinburgh] by the Lyon Register 1674.
