Bertie, Robert, 3rd Earl of Lindsey (1630 -1701)

Robert Bertie was the eldest son of Montagu, 2nd Earl of Lindsey, and Martha, daughter of William Cokayne, of Rushton in Northamptonshire. He succeeded his father in 1666, and married, firstly, in 1654, Mary, the younger daughter and coheir of John Massingberd, of London, Treasurer of the Honourable East India Company, by whom he had an only daughter, Arabella, who married the 3rd Earl Rivers. He married, secondly, Elizabeth, only daughter of Philip Wharton, 4th Earl of Wharton, by whom he had five sons, and, thirdly, Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Thomas Pope, Earl of Downe, and widow of Sir Francis Henry Lee Bart of Ditchley, by whom he had a son and a daughter. A portion of the library of Montagu Peregrine Albermarle Bertie, 12th Earl of Lindsey, was sold at Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge 23 July 1900.
