Barrow, John (1808 -1898)

John Barrow F.R.S. and F.S.A. was the second son of Sir John Barrow, second secretary to the Admiralty, author and traveller, who was created a baronet 30 March 1835, and Anna Maria, only daughter of Peter John Trüter of the Cape of Good Hope. Educated at Charterhouse, he became a clerk at the Admiralty in 1824, and Keeper of the Records at the Admiralty 1844 1857. He took an active part in promoting the expeditions to search for Sir John Franklin, and was an original member of the Alpine Club 1857, Lieutenant Colonel of the 18th Middlesex Rifle Corps, Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries 1844, and a Fellow of the Royal Society in the same year. He wrote a number of books including Excursions in the north of Europe. London, 1835; Visit to Iceland by way of Tronyem in the summer of 1834. London, 1835 . He never married. Part of the Library of Sir John Croker Barrow, 3rd Bart, who was his nephew was sold in London by Sotheby, Wilkinson and Hodge 13 December 1900.
