Bagot, Charles, Sir (1781 -1843)

Sir Charles Bagot was the second surviving son of William 1st Baron Bagot and Elizabeth Louisa St John, daughter of John St John, Viscount St John. Educated at Rugby School, he matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford on 26 October 1797, and took his B.A. 1801 and his M.A. in 1804. On 12 November 1801 he was admitted to Lincoln's Inn. On 22 June 1807, he entered Parliament as Member for Castle Rising and the following August was Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. In 1814 he was Minister Plenipotentiary at Paris, and was then sent on a special mission to the United States. Ambassador at St Petersburg in 1820, when he was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath, he was transferred to the Hague in 1824, declined the Governor Generalship of India because of ill health, and in 1841 accepted that of Canada, where after a memorable term of office he died. He married, 22 July 1806, Mary Charlotte Anne Wellesley Pole daughter of the third Earl of Mornington, and they had four sons and six daughters. His library was sold in London by R.H., T. & C. Evans 20 June 1844.
