Agnew, Stair, Sir, 6th Baronet (1834 -1909)
Stair Agnew was born at Lochnaw Castle in Dumfries and Galloway the fifth son of Sir Andrew Agnew, 7th Baronet, and his wife Madeline Carnegie. He attended Trinity College, Cambridge, before entering the legal profession as secretary to the Lord Advocate (1861-1866, 1868-1870). From 1870-1881 he served as Queen’s Remembrancer for Scotland, and Registrar-General for Scotland from 1881-1909. In 1871 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh
He married Georgina More Nisbett and had three offspring. In 1885 he became a Companion of the Order of the Bath, and was promoted to Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath in the 1895 Birthday Honours when he received his knighthood.
