Agar-Ellis, George James Welbore, Baron Dover (1797 -1833)

George James Welbore Agar Ellis was the only son and heir of Henry Welbore Agar (afterwards Ellis), 2nd Viscount Clifden, and Caroline Spencer, eldest daughter of George, 4th Duke of Marlborough. He was educated at a private school in Ealing, at Westminster and at Christ Church, Oxford, where he was admitted in 1814. He toured on the continent, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, both on 7 November 1816. He married, in 1822, Georgiana Howard, daughter of George Howard, 6th Earl of Carlisle. He was Member of Parliament for Heytesbury 1818 1820, Seaford 1820 1826, Ludgershall 1826 1830 and Oakhampton 1830 1831. He was created Baron Dover 20 June 1831. He collected pictures, and wrote and printed Catalogue of the principal pictures in Flanders and Holland 1822 London, 1826; he also published a number of historical works, about the French state prisoner, commonly called The Man in the Iron Mask, a life of Frederick the Second, and edited The Ellis Correspondence, and Letters of Horace Walpole. He died during his father's lifetime, 10 July 1833. A select portion of the library of Viscount Clifden was sold at Sotheby's 22 23 July 1937.
